Just north of Santa Rosa in Fulton is the region’s most big-business winery and the best bet for tasters who want some education and winery grandeur with their chardonnay. Though it’s right off the highway, KJ is a 120-acre world in itself, complete with truly stunning gardens, including acres of organic herbs, vegetables, flowers, a culinary and wine sensory garden, plenty of picnic spots, demonstration vineyards, occasional culinary programs to complement wine tastings from the brand’s vast selections (and sister wineries), and gift-shop browsing. Tastings are $5 for a sampling of KJ’s classics, and $15 for reserve wines. They also offer a food-paired $25 reserve tasting. Check the “tasting room” section of their website -- when I last looked they offered a coupon for a free reserve tasting for two. FYI: If you’re too lazy to hit the highway and seek out this spot, you can visit KJ’s Healdsburg tasting room, which is located in downtown Healdsburg at 337 Healdsburg Ave. Daily 10am-5pm. From Hwy. 101 N. take the River Rd. exit, turn left at the stoplight to go over the freeway, turn right onto Fulton Rd., go 1/2 mile, and it’s on your left.
