A product of celebrity restauranteur Pat Kuleto, it’s no wonder that Nick’s Cove also houses one of the best eateries around. With many of the dishes plucked directly from the Bay, the food is sublimely fresh. Like elsewhere in the region, oysters top the menu; start your meal off right by ordering the barbecue variety in garlic butter, accompanied by a bowl of Tomales Bay clam chowder. For mains, the Bandit’s Cioppino—dungeness crabs, mussels, clams, shrimp, tomatoes, anchovy butter and chili flake (whew, that was a mouthful, literally)—is a popular dish, but my personal favorite is the braised lamb shank with gremolata, red wine jus, and heirloom polenta. The extremely famished can spring for the Captain’s Culinary Pairing Menu, a seven-course meal available for large parties. Or if you’re really feeling adventurous, order the “red legged frog with mounds of sticky red tape;” the price tag’s a mere $2,000,000 (no one ever accused that Kuleto of lacking a sense of humor). On a clear night, try and score a table on the covered deck overlooking the bay. Tuesday is Local Nights with live music and drink and food deals, and a daily happy hour runs from 3 to 6pm.
