From this tiny hamlet surrounded by redwoods you can launch an all-day canoe trip down the gentle Russian River. Set forth from Burke’s Canoe Trips (707/887-1222; www.burkescanoetrips.com) from May through September, and someone there will pick you up 10 miles down the scenic river--a haven for turtles, river otters, egrets, and great blue herons--and take you back to your car. Also worth a detour is Kozlowski Farms (5566 Gravenstein Hwy; 707/887-1587; www.kozlowskifarms.com), a family farm that has turned into a gourmet-food business. The Kozlowskis’ apple butter, jams, and vinegars are sold in specialty shops throughout Sonoma County and beyond.
