Because it’s the northern gateway to the popular Redwood National and State Parks, one might assume Crescent City would be a major tourist mecca, rife with fine restaurants and hotels. Unfortunately, it’s not. Cheap motels, fast-food chains, and mini-malls are the main attractions along this stretch of Highway 101, as if Crescent City exists only to serve travelers on their way someplace else. The city is trying, however, to enhance its image, and if you know where to go (which is anywhere off Highway 101), there are actually numerous sites worth visiting and several outdoor-recreation options that are refreshingly nontouristy. You won’t want to make Crescent City your primary destination, mind you, but don’t be reluctant to spend a day lolling around here, either; you’d be surprised what the town has to offer besides gas and groceries.
