Home > Where To Go > Lake Tahoe & Reno > Reno

There’s the old adage that says you can’t be all things to all people, but Reno sure tries to come close. The city has been marketing itself as “America’s Adventure Place” and whether your idea of adventure is on the slopes, on a single track or at the slots, Reno won’t disappoint. While gambling is still a big attraction, don’t mistake this area for Las Vegas; if you’re looking for a fantasy world of exotic casino-hotels you’re in the wrong end of the state. Here the gaming action is only a part of the experience. Sure, you can have a great time gambling here 24 hours a day year-round, but it’s the heady combination of hotel bargains, great restaurants, a myriad of outdoor activities, and close proximity to Lake Tahoe that make Reno a fun and affordable tourist destination.
DIRECTIONS TO RENO
From San Francisco, take I-80 East to Sacramento and on to Reno; from Salt Lake City, take I-80 West from Los Angeles, take I-5 through central California to Sacramento and then I-80 to Reno. Be prepared for winter snowstorms that can make I-80 a chain-required highway. For road conditions, contact the Nevada Department of Transportation’s 24-hour Road Reporting Service (877/687-6237; http://safetravelusa.com/nv).
