Situated at the northern tip of the Bay Area. Petaluma is a historic riverfront town originally inhabited by the Coast Miwok Indians (in the Miwok language Petaluma means “valley of the little hills”). In addition to its historical affiliation with the Miwoks, Petaluma harbors Rancho Petaluma Adobe, a National Historic Landmark that is considered one of the most well-maintained structures of its era in Northern California. The city’s historical significance is complimented by its thriving agricultural industry, including dairy farms, olive groves, vineyards, and berry and vegetable farms. But Petaluma’s best asset is its well-preserved downtown area, offering a wonderful array of family owned restaurants, antique and specialty shops, and surprisingly good nightlife.
