The picturesque California town of Mill Valley is located on the eastern slope of Mount Tamalpais, the birthplace of mountain biking. Nestled among redwoods and canyons, Mill Valley is only ten minutes north of San Francisco, yet the quiet, wooded atmosphere feels very rural. While small in size, Mill Valley has a large range of outdoor options to occupy the most discriminating eco-adventurer from bird watching at Richardson Bay to strolling through the Edgewood Botanic Garden.
Mill Valley is known for being an "artsy" little town. Driving or walking through downtown Mill Valley will discover many art galleries, coffee shops, and other hallmarks of a typical art town. For those interested in the celebrity tour, The writer Jack Kerouac and the poet Gary Snyder once shared a cabin in town and part of Kerouac's novel, On The Road, takes place in a fictionalized version of Mill Valley called Mill City. Nature lovers will appreciate Mill Valley and the Homestead Valley Land Trust that maintains many minimally disturbed wildland areas and preserves which are open to the public from sunrise to dusk everyday.
