Fonda

Best Places's Review
The team behind longtime favorite Lalime’s in Berkeley has jumped on the tapas bandwagon to bring antojitos, or little Latin American plates, to Albany. Chef David Rosales, who once won the San Francisco Chronicle’s rising star of the year award, creates delicious flavor-packed dishes at this lively corner hot spot. If you want to be part of the action, opt for a seat at the bar or any of the downstairs tables that overlook the bustling kitchen; for a more intimate meal, head upstairs to the mezzanine. The menu features about 13 little plates, including a popular Veracruz-style cocktail brimming with scallops, sea bass, and crab; succulent duck tacos with sweet and smoky arbol salsa; unusual deep-fried quesadillas with mushrooms, epazote, and cream; and a grilled skirt steak with nopals (cactus), chayote, and an avocado salad. Be sure to try one of the specialty drinks like the eponymous Fonda—an exotic concoction of tequila and hibiscus infusion—or the fresh cucumber and vodka martini. AE, DC, MC, V; no checks; dinner every day; full bar; no reservations; at Curtis St.
